Start with trips, not cars

Sort your driving by how often you do it

Write down three groups: your everyday driving, regular longer trips and occasional long trips. For each group, check the return distance, where you could charge, how long charging would take and what it would cost. Give the most weight to the trips you do most often.

An EV can still be a good fit when an occasional interstate trip needs an extra charging stop or costs more to charge publicly. The useful comparison is whether that occasional inconvenience and cost are outweighed by easier charging and lower running costs across hundreds of ordinary commutes. Do not make every trip pass the same test.

No—change the plan

A worked example

Sam drives 42 km on five weekdays, 110 km on some Saturdays and 320 km to visit family four times a year. The car sits in a garage for ten hours nightly. A busy week is 320 km: (5 × 42 km) + 110 km.

  • Charging: using this guide’s rough estimate of 10 km per hour from a power point, each ten-hour night replaces about 100 km. Five weekday sessions could replace about 500 km, more than the 320 km busy week. You can use this guide to plan your home charging.
  • Range: the 110 km regular return trip sets the first shortlist. Sam should map the occasional 320 km route using the exact car’s cautious highway estimate and a dependable preferred and backup charging stop.

The four family trips may need public charging and more planning, but they happen far less often than the commute. Sam should compare the extra time and public-charging cost on those four trips with the charging savings and convenience across the rest of the year.

  • Practical fit: take child seats, mobility equipment or bulky gear to the test drive; check towing and carrying limits.
  • Cost: get drive-away, finance, insurance and electrical quotes for the exact car and setup.

Common questions

Do I need a driveway?

No. Regular charging at work, in an apartment car park, at an approved kerbside charger or during another long stop can work. Check access hours, permission, price, how often the space is occupied and one backup. If you would need to sit at a public charger as a separate weekly errand, include that time and cost in your decision. You can test the charging routine against a normal week.

Should one annual road trip rule out an EV?

Usually not. Map the actual route using a cautious range estimate, choose a preferred charging stop and save a backup. If the trip is frequent, involves towing or regularly goes beyond dependable charging coverage, give it more weight—it is then part of the car’s normal job.

What does “advertised range” mean?

It is the official laboratory-test figure published for a specific model and variant, commonly labelled WLTP. It helps compare cars under the same test, but it is not a promise for every road. Unlike a petrol car, an EV will usually travel further in lower-speed city driving than at sustained highway speeds. Weather, hills, load and towing can reduce the distance further. This guide’s 20% allowance is only a quick first screen; plan important routes using the exact car and conditions.

Should I buy now or wait for prices to come down?

It depends on your situation rather than general market timing. Buying now makes sense when you have confirmed charging, a car that covers your routes, and a drive-away price and running cost you can absorb even if resale values change. Waiting makes sense when the body style, towing capacity or budget you need is not yet available in a suitable BEV, when your charging access will improve in a known timeframe, or when you are not yet confident about either of the two checks above. Any timing forecast you read today may be out of date within months.

How much does home charging cost to set up and run?

Many people start on a normal wall socket (a "power point") at roughly 10 km of range per hour, which needs no installation. A dedicated home wall charger is faster but adds an install cost, so get an electrician's quote for your exact setup. Running cost depends on your electricity plan and is usually well below petrol, especially on a time-of-use or dedicated EV tariff. Are there Australian rebates or incentives?

Support changes over time and by state or territory, and some measures (such as the fringe-benefits-tax concession for plug-in hybrids) have ended. Check current state government and Australian Government pages for stamp-duty, registration or novated-lease concessions that apply to you, and factor any confirmed saving into your budget rather than an assumed one. Does this check work for a used EV?

Yes, but the price snapshot in the self-check is for new cars. For a used EV, confirm the exact variant’s original range, battery-health information, charging connectors, insurance cost and remaining warranty for the whole vehicle, traction battery, electric powertrain and shorter-covered components. Age, kilometres and battery condition matter more than the badge alone.
