BEV vs PHEV: which is right for you?

A BEV runs entirely on electricity. A PHEV combines electric driving with a petrol engine.

The short answer

Choose a BEV when charging works; choose a PHEV only if you will plug it in.

A battery electric vehicle is simpler and has no petrol engine. A plug-in hybrid can cover short trips electrically — commonly around 40–80 km on a charge — then use petrol, but carries both systems. If a PHEV is rarely charged, you lose much of its benefit, burn more fuel than the brochure figure suggests, and may drive a heavy petrol car. BEV

Battery electric vehicle: battery, electric motor and charging port; no petrol engine or exhaust.

PHEV

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle: a small battery and electric motor plus a petrol engine. You plug it in to drive on electricity for a short range — commonly around 40–80 km — then it runs on petrol.

Hybrid (HEV)

A non-plug-in hybrid charged through driving and braking. No charging port, so there is nothing to forget to plug in.

Choose a BEV if…

  • You have dependable routine charging
  • Available models cover your regular long drives and practical needs
  • You want to leave petrol, oil changes and tailpipe emissions behind

Consider a PHEV if…

  • You can charge most days and most routine trips fit its electric range
  • You frequently travel where public charging is genuinely impractical
  • The exact vehicle’s space, towing or other capability is not available in a suitable BEV

Common questions

Do you have to plug in a PHEV?

You do not have to, but you should. A PHEV drives fine on petrol alone, yet its whole advantage comes from charging it — usually from an ordinary power point or home charger overnight — so short trips run on cheaper electricity. Left unplugged, it behaves like a heavier, thirstier petrol car. See whether you need a home charger.

Does a PHEV charge itself?

It can recover some energy while slowing and the engine may charge the battery, but regular plugging in is what allows meaningful electric driving without burning petrol.

Is a PHEV automatically cheaper to run?

Does the electric-car FBT exemption apply to a PHEV?

Generally no. PHEVs provided through a salary-packaging arrangement from 1 April 2025 are not eligible for the electric-car fringe benefits tax exemption. Some arrangements entered into before that date may continue under transitional rules. Check the ATO's FBT and electric cars guidance or a tax adviser before using a PHEV purchase in a salary-packaging comparison with a BEV.
