A realistic first-year timeline
In the first week, find the model-specific manual charge-port or cable release, physical key and backup start process. These help if the app, phone or car does not respond. Save roadside assistance and charging-network support numbers so you are not searching for them beside a failed charger. Check the front boot (“frunk”), underfloor compartments and cable storage if fitted, so charging gear stays secure and easy to reach.
Your first-week EV checklist
- Read the emergency pages: find the instructions for low charge, backup starting, releasing the charging cable and roadside recovery before you need them.
- Test routine charging: complete a home or public charging session before you depend on it. Confirm any schedule or charge limit and learn the connector lights, so a simple setting does not leave the car short.
- Set up support: sign in to the vehicle and charging-network apps you need, add a payment method where required and save support numbers. This avoids account setup when you need to charge.
- Check the basics: find the tyre-pressure placard and check cold pressures because incorrect pressure affects safety, tyre wear and range. Identify the supplied cable and use the home EV charging guide to confirm what it is for.
- Record a baseline: note a normal week’s kilometres, charging energy and electricity tariff. You will then have something useful to compare if range or costs change.

When uncertain, take a photo of the warning, note the battery percentage and what the car was doing, then check the owner's manual or contact roadside assistance or the manufacturer.
Parked battery drain (sometimes called “vampire drain”) varies by car, temperature and active features. If a drop seems unusual, record the parked time, starting and ending percentage, temperature and active standby features. Repeatable unexplained loss is useful evidence for the manufacturer; no setting preserves charge perfectly, and battery protection systems should remain as the manufacturer specifies.
The habits worth keeping
- Follow your battery guidance: some batteries suit an everyday limit around 80%; others are meant to reach 100% regularly. Following the current advice for your car helps protect battery health without needlessly limiting range.
- Prepare the cabin while connected: if the car supports it, scheduled or remote cabin pre-conditioning while plugged in improves comfort and may preserve some departure range. The benefit depends on temperature, charging power and vehicle logic.
- Prepare for a long break: follow the manual's holiday guidance, leave the recommended charge buffer, disable optional energy-intensive standby features where appropriate and avoid repeatedly waking the car through apps. This reduces avoidable battery drain while you are away.
- Practise smooth regen: leave a safe following distance and lift progressively in one-pedal modes so slowing remains predictable. Regenerative braking never replaces the brake pedal, attention or the applicable road rules.
- Charge for the next trip: having enough range plus a sensible buffer matters more than routinely filling the battery to 100%.
- Keep tyres correctly inflated: pressure affects safety, wear and energy use.
- Install important updates: read the release notes because an update may change controls, features or charging advice, then follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Keep charging gear clean, dry and undamaged: damage or unusual heat can indicate an electrical risk, so stop using affected equipment.
- Service the car: EVs still need tyres, brakes, suspension, cooling systems and other safety items checked at the specified interval.
Your first longer drive

If the battery becomes very low
Follow the car’s warnings and navigation advice, reduce unnecessary energy use only when it is safe, and head to a suitable charger. Do not treat the final displayed kilometres as a challenge: speed, weather, hills and climate control can change the estimate. If the car cannot continue, stop in a safe place where possible, switch on the hazard lights and contact roadside assistance.
Tell the operator the exact make and model. EV recovery and towing instructions vary by vehicle and drivetrain, so use the owner’s manual rather than improvising or allowing the car to be towed in a way the manufacturer prohibits.
Common first-year questions
Must I keep the battery between 20% and 80%?
No universal rule fits every battery. It is a useful general habit for many cars, but some manufacturers recommend regular 100% charging for particular battery types. Follow the current owner-manual or in-car guidance.
How much battery loss while parked is normal?
There is no single percentage that fits every EV. Standby systems, temperature, software and remote features differ. Follow the manual's parking guidance, record a repeatable unexplained drop and contact the manufacturer if it is unusual for your car.
Is it normal for the car to make noise while parked?
Often. Battery cooling or heating, charging equipment and pumps can operate while charging or preparing the cabin. Check unfamiliar persistent noises or any accompanying warning.
What happens if my EV runs very low or stops?
Follow the vehicle warnings and find a suitable charger without relying on the final displayed kilometres. If the car cannot continue, stop safely, use the hazard lights and call roadside assistance. Give them the exact model and follow its specific recovery instructions.
How often does an EV need servicing?
Use the time or distance interval in the manufacturer’s schedule. EVs have fewer routine engine items, but tyres, brakes, suspension, cooling systems, cabin filters and other safety items still need inspection and maintenance.
Will my electricity bill suddenly jump?
