Set up payment for your planned charger and backup
Start with the operator’s listing for each charger. It will tell you whether to use an app, tap a contactless bank card or use a registered RFID card—a reusable card or fob linked to your charging account. Set up only the accounts you need, but do it before the trip so poor mobile reception does not stop you from starting a session.

Networks, access and prices change. Treat the operator’s current listing as authoritative rather than memorising a cents-per-kWh figure.
Use recent driver reports to spot possible queues or faults
Recent PlugShare check-ins and local route-, state- or model-owner groups can flag queues, faults and access changes before a directory is corrected. Treat those reports as leads to verify: they can be stale or anecdotal. Use the operator listing, charger screen and site signs for the current payment method, session controls and access conditions.
Sign up before a road trip
Yes—before a road trip, set up the networks shown at your planned stop and backup. Create the accounts, confirm your email address, add a valid payment method and make sure you can still sign in. You do not need every charging app in Australia: use PlugShare to identify the relevant providers first. Signing up beside a charger with poor reception is an avoidable first-session challenge.
One RFID card can work with some providers
Yes—many Australian charging apps let you register the same physical RFID card or fob. The card supplies an identifier; each participating app links that identifier separately to your account and payment method. Add the same card number to each app that supports your own RFID, then a tap at that network’s charger bills the account you registered with that provider.
A second option is roaming, where one provider’s account and linked RFID can start selected partner-network chargers. For example, Chargefox supports its app or linked RFID at participating roaming stations, although the price can differ from the site owner’s app. Neither arrangement makes a card universal: some providers accept only their own card, use an app or contactless Visa or Mastercard instead, or support RFID only at certain chargers. Check each provider’s current instructions before a trip and use a dedicated charging card rather than assuming every contactless or public-transport card will remain compatible.
If the charger is broken
- Read the screen and confirm you selected the correct bay or plug.
- Unplug safely, close the session in the app and retry once.
- Try another available unit at the site.
- Call the support number printed on the charger; quote the charger ID and error.
- Leave for your planned backup before your remaining range becomes tight.
- Add a factual PlugShare check-in so the next driver knows.
Public EV charging etiquette
Use a bay only while charging, move once finished, return shared AC cables neatly and do not unplug another car. On a busy fast charger, continuing far beyond 80% can be slow; leave when you have enough energy to reach the next stop safely. That may be above 80% on a remote route, in poor weather, while towing or when the backup is unavailable.
Check the current network and site terms. An idle fee can apply after charging finishes or a grace period expires; a congestion fee can apply under a network's busy-site rules; and ordinary parking charges come from the property or car park. They are separate from the energy price.

Common public-charging questions
Do I need to bring a cable to a public EV charger?
It depends on the charger. DC fast chargers have an attached cable. Some slower Type 2 AC destination chargers also have a cable, while others require your own Type 2-to-Type 2 cable. Before relying on a site, check whether its listing says tethered (cable attached) or socketed/untethered (bring your own), then confirm the cable rating and car compatibility.
Can I charge from a caravan-park power point?
Only with advance permission and an expressly suitable connection. Ask the property operator about the exact outlet, site rules, price and where the cable may run. Follow the instructions for the vehicle and its Mode 2 cable, including weather and positioning limits. Some cars or cables allow a lower current, but that does not guarantee an unknown supply is safe or prevent a breaker trip. Do not improvise with extension leads or adaptors. If protection trips, stop, report it and do not keep resetting or experimenting. Keep a public-charging backup rather than treating a caravan outlet as a fast charger.
Can a non-Tesla EV use a Tesla Supercharger?
Yes, at selected Australian sites if your vehicle has a compatible CCS2 connection. In the Tesla app, choose “Charge Your EV” to find an eligible Supercharger, check its availability and start the session. The short cables and site layout may not suit every charge-port position, so confirm the cable reaches without parking across bay lines or blocking another stall.
How long does public EV charging take?
Allow hours for slower AC destination charging and often tens of minutes for a useful DC fast-charging top-up. The actual time depends on the car’s accepted power, the charger, battery temperature and starting charge. DC charging normally slows as the battery fills, so a charger’s headline power is not a promise of the speed your car will receive.
How much does public EV charging cost in Australia?
There is no single national price. Check the operator listing for the energy or time rate and any session, idle or congestion fee. Check the site signs for separate parking charges, then use our Australian EV charging cost comparison to compare public and home charging with your own driving.
