New EV
A new EV starts with the full applicable manufacturer terms, but there may not be one warranty period for the entire car. The whole vehicle, traction battery, electric powertrain, infotainment, paint, 12-volt battery and other components can have different years, kilometre limits and exclusions. You know the car's history, and you get current software, safety features and charging hardware. The trade-off is price: new EVs carry a premium, and depreciation can be noticeable in the first few years.
Used EV
A used EV bought from a private seller or dealer can cost substantially less than the same model new, depending on age, demand and condition. Depreciation has already done some of its work. The catch is that you inherit the car's full history, including storage at very high or very low charge, heat exposure and charging habits. Battery age and use both matter, so judge the car from its measured condition rather than odometer kilometres alone.

What should you check before buying a used EV?
Start with these EV-specific checks, then complete the ordinary used-car checks in the checklist below.

Pre-purchase checklist
- Run a $2 PPSR search using the VIN to check for a security interest and recorded stolen or written-off status.
- Check the service history, open recalls, registration details and whether the VIN matches the car and paperwork.
- Inspect tyre wear, brakes and the underside for damage. Confirm both keys and every advertised charging cable are included, because replacing a missing cable adds cost and may delay charging at home or at an untethered public charger. See home EV charging equipment for the cable and socket types.
- Use an EV test-drive checklist to check range estimates, warning lights, cabin systems and charging. Arrange an independent inspection by someone familiar with that EV model.
Warranty and buyer protections
Manufacturer warranty cover often follows the vehicle, but component terms, transfer rules and conditions vary:
- Ask the manufacturer to list what remains for this VIN: whole-vehicle, traction-battery, electric-powertrain and any shorter component-specific cover. One advertised duration may not apply to every part.
- Check the warranty booklet and full service history. Do not assume a missed service automatically cancels all cover; ask the manufacturer what applies to this VIN.
- Time and kilometre limits matter. A battery warranty stated as “8 years or 160,000 km” ends at whichever comes first; also check its capacity threshold and how a claim is assessed.
- A used EV bought from a licensed dealer may have a state or territory statutory warranty as well as consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. Eligibility and duration vary by jurisdiction, vehicle age, kilometres and price.
- A private sale generally does not receive the same Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees. Check your state or territory consumer-affairs guidance before paying a deposit.
A worked example
Priya is considering a 2022 EV with 52,000 km on the odometer. Its original Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) range was 460 km. A battery report estimates 91% state of health. She calls the manufacturer and confirms five years and 108,000 km of battery warranty remain. The charging inlet is CCS2, and an independent inspection finds no warning signs.
Multiplying 460 km by 91% gives about 419 km, but that is only a rough capacity-based comparison with the original laboratory figure — not a promise of real-world range. Speed, temperature, tyres and battery buffers all affect what Priya will see. She uses the test drive's energy consumption and the usable battery estimate to judge whether it covers her routine.
If the same car had an unexplained low battery-health estimate, no service history and no compatible fast chargers on Priya's regular routes, the picture would be different. Each issue may be manageable; combined, they suggest negotiating based on evidence or walking away.
When new makes more sense
- You depend on the maximum available range for regional driving and cannot accept uncertainty about battery health.
- No suitable used examples of the model you want exist in Australia yet.
- A current government incentive, finance offer or fleet arrangement available to you meaningfully closes the price gap. Check the rules and end date before relying on it.
- You want the latest safety or charging hardware — some older EVs charge more slowly than current models.
Common questions
Can I get a battery health report before buying?
For many models, yes. Third-party OBD2 tools (such as Car Scanner or specific apps for your brand) can read detailed battery data. Some dealers will provide a printed report. For private sales, ask the seller to allow you to connect a tool or take the car to a dealership for a pre-purchase inspection — reputable sellers will agree.
What is a reasonable battery state of health for a used EV?
There is no universal pass mark because age, model, range needs and the way SoH is measured all matter. Many battery warranties mention a capacity threshold, often around 70%, but terms and test methods vary. Compare the report with similar cars, confirm the manufacturer's warranty threshold and make sure the estimated usable range comfortably covers your routine.
Does fast-charging a lot damage the battery?
Frequent DC fast-charging does contribute to slightly faster degradation over many years compared to mostly home charging. It is a secondary factor — extreme temperatures and regular deep discharges matter more. A car charged mostly at home and occasionally fast-charged is not a concern.
