A battery electric vehicle can cost less to power and maintain, feel quiet and responsive, charge while you are parked and produce no exhaust from the car. The size of the saving depends on the purchase price, where you charge and how far you drive. An EV will not be the cheapest or most convenient option for every household.

The benefits are usually strongest when:

  • you can charge dependably where the car already parks;
  • you drive enough for lower energy costs to matter; and
  • the purchase price, insurance and depreciation remain competitive with a similar petrol car.

A fully electric car. It uses a rechargeable battery and electric motor, with no petrol or diesel engine.

The motor slows the car and returns some energy to the battery. The friction brakes still work when needed.

1. EV energy can cost less per kilometre

Electric motors use energy efficiently, and home electricity is often cheaper per kilometre than petrol. The best case is dependable home charging on a suitable overnight tariff or from excess rooftop solar. Public fast charging is convenient, but it usually costs more than home charging.

The saving is not the same for everyone. Your car's energy use, electricity plan, petrol alternative and charging losses all matter. Use your own charging prices rather than relying on a general savings claim.

EV running costs: a worked 100 km energy example

Imagine an EV using 18 kWh/100 km and a petrol car using 7 L/100 km. These are ChooseEV examples, not Australian averages or promises for a particular model.

In this example, home charging saves $7.90 per 100 km compared with petrol. Public charging saves $2.50. Electricity drawn from the wall may also be higher than the car's stated consumption because charging loses some energy as heat. Purchase price, insurance, servicing, tyres, finance and resale are still missing, so this is an energy comparison—not total ownership cost.

2. The powertrain is simpler to maintain

A BEV has no engine oil, spark plugs, fuel system, exhaust or conventional multi-speed gearbox. Regenerative braking can also reduce wear on brake pads and discs. The Australian Government says the average overall EV maintenance bill is around 40% lower than for an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle. That is an average, not a promise: service intervals and prices vary by model and brand. Compare written schedules and quotes for the exact cars on your shortlist, along with the manufacturer's local service and parts support.

Lower maintenance does not mean no maintenance. EVs still need scheduled inspections plus tyres, brakes, suspension, cabin filters and model-specific coolant or fluid work. Their extra weight and strong acceleration can increase tyre wear if the car is driven hard.

The main traction battery is not a routine replacement item, although its usable capacity can gradually reduce. Check the exact model's battery warranty, including its age, kilometre and capacity conditions. When buying used, ask for a battery health report where one is available.

3. Charging can happen while you do something else

With dependable charging where the car normally parks, you can plug in after arriving home or at work and leave with the charge you need. The car charges while you get on with your day, so you may need fewer separate trips to refuel.

This convenience depends on access. Apartment residents, renters and drivers who park on the street may need approval or a reliable workplace or public routine. Check whether charging fits somewhere you already park; a special weekly charging trip is less convenient than filling with petrol.

4. Driving is quiet, smooth and responsive

An electric motor responds immediately when you press the accelerator and does not pause for gear changes. At low speeds there is no engine vibration or exhaust noise, which can make traffic and suburban driving feel calmer. Tyre and wind noise are still present at higher speeds.

Many EVs can also pre-heat or cool the cabin from an app before departure. In an enclosed garage this avoids running a petrol engine to operate the climate control, though the feature and app access vary by model.

5. There are no tailpipe emissions

A BEV has no exhaust pipe, so it produces no tailpipe carbon dioxide or exhaust pollutants while driving. That matters most where people live, walk and breathe. The car and battery still take energy and materials to manufacture, tyres still create particles, and charging electricity can create emissions at the power station.

Useful extras—if the car includes them

Extra space

Some dedicated EV designs use a flat floor or front storage area, but packaging varies. Check the actual seats and cargo area.

Vehicle-to-load

Some models can power compatible appliances from the battery. Output, adapters and supported uses differ by model.

Remote features

Apps may control charging and cabin temperature. Confirm whether a subscription, mobile coverage or account transfer is required.

When the benefits may be smaller

  • You cannot charge dependably: frequent public fast charging costs more and asks for more of your time.
  • You drive very little: small annual energy savings may take a long time to offset a higher purchase price.
  • Your regular job is unusually demanding: frequent towing, remote travel or very long days can narrow the suitable shortlist.
  • The exact car costs more elsewhere: insurance, tyres, finance and depreciation can outweigh energy savings.
